The best PREVENTION is early DETECTION

9/30/2013
When it comes to your health, the word cancer can terrify you. After hearing about my close friend having cancer, nothing else the Doctor could say could block out the terror I felt inside. The word cancer alone can just weaken a person. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. After months of educating myself on this evil word, my thought process changed. Cancer does not have to ruin your life. Luckily, my friend detected it early. The doctor kept telling us “early detection is the best prevention.” My friend had to go through very minimal treatment and had the best care. This was all because she went in for her yearly screening. If it was not for her putting her health first, who knows what situation we would be in right now…

According to The American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer among women in the United States, first being skin cancer. About 232,340 new cases of invasive breast cancer will arise through 2013. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 36. Frightening right?
On the other hand, the death rates for breast cancer have been going down. Right now there are more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

That is amazing!

The best way to fight breast cancer is finding early detection and getting better treatment. At Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center we are committed to bringing state-of-the-art healthcare to our communities. We use 3D mammography, which is the top of the line technology to detect the smallest forms of cancer.  The average female above 40 years of age should get a mammography annually. However, please talk to your physician. Only your doctor can give you the best information on how often you should get a mammography.

Life can get busy and many females don’t think they have the time to take care of themselves. Getting these checkups can help save a life! It is important to help spread the word to the people close to you. I am only 23 years old, but I know the importance of monitoring your body. So to the young women out there, don’t take your youth for granted. Cancer does not have an age limit.

Through the month of October, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center will be giving females the chance to get 3D mammography for only $50.The best part is, you don’t need to have insurance! This goes for all women over 40. The best prevention is early detection! Be proactive and schedule your appointment today!
