The Robert and Beverly Lewis Family Cancer Care Center

In 1989 Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center conducted a feasibility study on the community need for a cancer treatment facility. At that time, people living in the Pomona Valley and Inland Empire had to travel a great distance to receive quality cancer treatment at a major medical center. It was determined that there was a huge need for a local, quality cancer treatment facility with appropriate supportive services to ease the cancer experience, not only for the patient, but for their loved ones as well.
 
This vision became a reality through the commitment and generosity of community leaders, community members, the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) foundation, volunteers, associates and the physicians. The Robert and Beverly Lewis Family was instrumental in helping to raise ten million dollars during a time of financial constraint and shrinking philanthropic donations. Of this benefaction, half was used to remodel and equip an existing building. The remainder was designated for an endowment to provide financial support for community cancer education, for prevention and outreach programs, community screenings and other frequently unreimbursed but essential support activities.
 
In 1993, The Robert and Beverly Lewis Family Cancer Care Center opened its beautiful 37,000 square foot freestanding outpatient facility located ½ mile northeast of Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center main campus at 1910 Royalty Drive in Pomona, California. We have been serving the Inland Empire since 1993 by delivering comprehensive community based cancer services all in one facility, staffed by people who care.
 
The Oncology program at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center has continually achieved the maximum of three years accreditation from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer since 1978 with special commendations in several key areas.
 

The Cancer Care Center offers an integrated approach to ambulatory care service. Housed under one roof, the Center provides Surgical, Radiation and Medical Oncology. In additions to these medical services, the Center provides a rich and varied selection of patient and community support and education services. By integrating these programs into a single location, it allows patients to find support in a positive, caring and convenient environment.

 

Construction began on the Breast Health Center in the year 2000 and they began offering mammography and biopsy services in August, 2001 here in the Cancer Care Center. We were first in the Inland and Pomona Valley region to offer Digital Mammography with Computer Aided-Diagnosis (CAD) in 2003, offering women the most state-of-the-art diagnostic tools available. The new digital mammography enables us to find cancer at an even earlier stage than was ever previously available.

 

Our Radiation Oncology department expanded our radiation capabilities with the Trilogy System linear accelerator in 2006 (Rapid-Arc was added in 2009) and TomoTherapy Hi-Art HD System in 2010. The extraordinary power and flexibility of the Trilogy and TomoTherapy systems assures us that we can design a treatment plan that gives patients the best and most appropriate treatment possible. By combining the most powerful radiation therapy treatment machines with high quality imaging, tracking and monitoring devices, we can deliver the most accurate treatment possible with greater patient comfort since patients spend less time on the treatment table and experiences fewer side effects. This translates to better outcomes. Now treatments are planned using 4-D technology that encompasses breathing and organ motion, a step above 3-D!

 

In 2005 our Radiation Oncology moved the Brachytherapy High-Dose Radiation (HDR) equipment from the hospital to the Cancer Care Center. This allows patients to experience easy accessibility along with the comfort and resources of the beautiful environment of the Cancer Care Center. Now we offer HDR Brachytherapy treatment here for such disease sites such as Lung, breast, rectal, gynecological and most recently Breast cancer treatment (MammoSite, Contura & Savi) technique.

 

We will continue to treat the “whole patient and family,” not just the disease of cancer. Today we offer a comprehensive program of services from education and screening for the prevention of cancer, to state-of-the-art medical and radiation cancer treatment, with emotional support offered through all aspects of treatment. A caring team of professional and volunteer staff is committed to helping meet the individual needs of cancer survivors and their families. Responding to the needs and wants of our patients, we provide support before, during and after treatment as well as offering wellness and other health promotion programs.
