Philanthropy Aids Bright Future for Cardiovascular Care

Making a Difference for Cardiac Patients

Thanks to a generous gift in memory of Charles and Marion Stead, the Stead Heart and Vascular Center was formally established in 1986.

For nearly 25 years, the Stead Heart and Vascular Center has continued in its quest for excellence by being the first in the region to offer such services as pacemaker implantation, coronary stenting, electrophysiology, MAZE procedure, robotic assisted cardiac vein grafting, and carotid, peripheral and Abdominal Aorta stenting, to name just a few.

Many of these services and services still to come would not be possible without a strong philanthropic group of supporters.

In 2001, when the Heart Center outgrew its department, an $8.6 million capital campaign assisted in funding the construction and equipment upgrades for a new state-of-the-art Cardiac Catheterization Lab. The lab, still in operation today, encompasses 14,500 square feet, a dedicated cardiac surgery suite, three procedure rooms, and 12 holding bays.

In addition to one time gifts and large capital campaigns, a tradition of on-going support is also alive and well for the Stead Heart and Vascular Center’s Endowment Fund. For 16 years, the Heartbeat Gala is held annually to support the Stead Heart Endowment Fund, providing the funds necessary to incorporate new procedures, technologies and educational services. To date, the Gala has raised nearly $2 million dollars.

More recently a new annual event is blossoming. Stead Heart for Women (an educational program within the heart and vascular center) and the Foundation have teamed to start the Power of Red Annual Luncheon. With a targeted audience the focus, more than 300 women have participated in the events first two years. The program has raised nearly $5,000 for future Stead Heart for Women education and outreach programs.

So as we look ahead to our 25th year, and beyond, the importance of philanthropy should not be underestimated in its role in establishing the Stead Heart and Vascular Center’s greatness and success. We hope that like so many others, you too will feel the philanthropic itch and support what has become the highest-ranked, most comprehensive cardiovascular center in the region.
