Medical Oncology and Hematology Services

Most medical oncologists/hematologists based in our local community have office practices at The Robert and Beverly Lewis Family Cancer Care Center. In addition to physician consults, infusion rooms are available for the delivery of chemotherapy and other cancer fighting drugs.

Our medical oncologists are physicians that are specially trained in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer and cancer-related symptoms in adults. After completing medical school they receive at least three years of additional training to become specialists in adult internal medicine. Further fellowship training of three or more years follows with intensive training in medical oncology and hematology. Board certification in medical oncology, as well as hematology, is attained after receiving a board certification in internal medicine, successful completion of fellowship training and passage of the national independent board exams in medical oncology and hematology.

Many of our oncology providers are also certified in the specialty of hematology, which deals with the treatment of blood and bone marrow disorders. Conditions such as chronic anemia, leukemia and other bone marrow disorders fall into the specialty of hematology. Cancers of specific organs, such as breast, lung, and colon fall within the specialty of medical oncology. However, the specialties of medical oncology and hematology are very closely related and significantly overlap with the treatments of conditions such as lymphoma, multiple myloma and other related disorders, which are handled by both specialty providers. In short, both medical oncologists and hematologists have broad experience in the entire spectrum of cancers and blood disorders.

Medical oncologists and hematologists work closely with your primary care physician as well as surgeons, radiation oncologists and nurses to develop the best, integrated treatment plan for the individual. Medical oncologists/hematologists use a variety of modalities: chemotherapy, hormone therapies, immune therapies, and biologic therapies to treat, and when possible, cure cancer. They can also offer investigational drug therapies through participation in ongoing clinical trials and use supportive therapies including the latest anti-emetics, colony stimulating factors, pain therapies, and cancer preventive agents. They offer these supportive measures during all phases of cancer treatment to maintain your well being as much as possible.
Our medical oncologists and hematologists are first and foremost concerned about your well-being. In addition to listening and talking with the patient and family, these specialists will refer you to other support services as necessary. We are proud to have these highly trained physicians be a part of the cancer program that serves our community.
