The Cancer Registry serves as the link in a comprehensive, confidential,
data collections system for Pomona Valley Hospital staff physicians and
the Center. Hospitals, physicians and other facilities that diagnose and
treat cancer patients are required by law to report cancer related information
to their local regional registry, which in turn reports to the California
Cancer Registry (CCR). The CCR and regional registries use this information
for research into the causes of cancer. Reports about the incidence of
cancer are used for public education, health planning and research projects.
All cancer cases diagnosed and/or treated at PVHMC are recorded in a computerized,
text-coded format to insure the strictest reporting confidentiality.
The Cancer Registry is one of the requirements (Volume
I: Cancer Program Standards, section 8.1.0, American College of Surgeons,
Commission on Cancer) necessary to maintain our approval as a Community
Hospital Comprehensive Cancer Program. Pomona Valley Hospital Medical
Center's oncology program has been approved by the American College of
Surgeons, Commission on Cancer since 1978.
The Registry continues to follow each patient for life,
charting recurrences, subsequent treatment, and quality of life. This
information is analyzed for patterns of care, associated outcomes, and
is utilized in administrative planning for ongoing cancer programs and
supportive services.
