Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)

No one wants to experience a complicated birth. But, its good to know that, in such an event, Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) has the on-site staff and facilities to help. Our state-of-the-art, 33-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) accredited by California Children's Services for neonatal surgery, is a regionally recognized emergency facility for newborns.

Babies who become NICU patients may have been born at PVHMC or transferred from another hospital in the region. They are cared for by a multi-disciplinary team headed by pediatric physician specialists, called neonatologists, who have advanced training in the care and treatment of newborns experiencing conditions and complications at birth. The team also includes other physician specialists (cardiologists and neurologists, for example), neonatal nurse clinicians, respiratory therapists, medical social workers, pharmacists and developmental therapists.

When an infant, born at another hospital, is in need of the specialty care of a NICU, our Neonatal Transport Team, comprised of neonatologists, registered nurses and respiratory therapists, along with our specially-equipped emergency vehicles are ready to respond at a moments notice. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit offers virtually every type of procedure and care for sick newborns, including:

• Surfactant replacement therapy
• Outpatient services
