Today more than ever, women recognize the
benefits of an ongoing program of preventive healthcare and wellness.
An important part of such a program is regular screening for breast cancer.
PVHMC's team of highly qualified medical specialists provides compassionate
and expert care dedicated to serving women of all ages. Breast cancer
is the most common form of cancer diagnosed in women in the United States.
One of the most important weapons in the battle against this deadly
disease
is early detection and diagnosis. PVHMC offers some of the most advanced
procedures available for detecting and identifying breast tumors, including
mammography and outpatient core biopsy. MAMMOGRAPHY
AND BREAST BIOPSY When an abnormality of the breast tissue
is discovered, further analysis may be required to determine if the growth
is malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous). Stereotactic breast
biopsy is a simple outpatient procedure that allows physicians to analyze
a sample of breast tissue for the presence of cancer cells. Under local
anesthesia, a tiny "nick" is made in the patient's breast and a small
sample of tissue is removed for analysis. The procedure is relatively
painless and requires no stitches. Not all patients are candidates for
stereotactic biopsy. Stereotactic Biopsy is utilized when an abnormality
is visualized by x-ray. Abnormalities that are visualized by ultrasound
are also biopsied at our center as a simple outpatient procedure. Under
certain circumstances, a traditional "open" surgical biopsy is required
to remove and analyze a sample of tissue. Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center
