Sports Medicine Center

Evaluation of Injuries

During the initial SMC appointment, athletes will be evaluated by a physician and an athletic trainer or physical therapist. A complete injury evaluation is performed and X-rays, an MRI, or other diagnostic tests will be obtained, if needed.

Athletes should dress appropriately to allow easy examination of the injured area. Parents, coaches, and school athletic trainers are encouraged to accompany the athlete to discuss the particular injury, treatment options, and to better understand time frames for return to play.

96% of the athletes treated at the SMC for musculoskeletal injuries do not require surgery. In these cases supervised Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation can achieve a full recovery. For those few injuries that do require surgery, recovery and treatment through Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation will ensure the best possible chance of an athlete’s full return to sport. The PVHMC Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Department will establish an individualized treatment plan for all athletes regardless of injury. Here the athlete will receive care and instruction from experienced, licensed staff familiar with their particular injury.

For those few injuries requiring the services of medical specialists (e.g. orthopedic surgeons, ear nose and throat, neurosurgeons), immediate referrals will be made to skilled physicians with an interest in sports related injuries.

The wide range of expertise available through the SMC … helps make us your ‘team’ for sports medicine!
