Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Intensive Care Unit 3 (ICU 3) Receives Silver-Level Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses

National three-year award marks exceptional patient care and healthy work environment

POMONA, CALIF.September 26, 2023 – Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) has been awarded a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence for its Intensive Care Unit (ICU 3), which specializes in caring for patients with acute critical strokes and other serious neurological conditions, from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN).

The Beacon Award for Excellence is a significant recognition of exceptional patient care and healthy work environments. The award recognizes PVHMC ICU 3 caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards. Units that achieve this three-year, three-level award with a gold, silver or bronze designation meet national criteria consistent with the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the National Quality Healthcare Award.

“Taking care of critically-ill patients requires a high level of skill and being recognized as a Beacon unit confirms our nurses’ commitment to providing exceptional patient care in the intensive care unit,” said Darlene Scafiddi, MSN, RN, NEA-BC Executive Vice President, Patient Care Services at PVHMC. “We’re proud of our team and their rigorous dedication to practicing the highest quality of evidence-based care for the communities we serve.”

The PVHMC ICU 3 met the following evidence-based Beacon Award for Excellence criteria: leadership structures and systems, appropriate staffing and staff engagement, effective communication, knowledge management and learning and development, evidence-based practice and processes, and outcome measurement.

AACN President Terry Davis, PhD, RN, NE-BC, CHTP, FAAN, applauds the exemplary efforts of the caregivers at the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center ICU 3 for working together to meet and exceed the high standards set forth by the Beacon Award for Excellence.

“These dedicated healthcare professionals join other members of the exceptional community of nurses who set the standard for optimal patient care,” Davis said. “The Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes caregivers in stellar units whose consistent and systematic approach to evidence-based care optimizes patient outcomes. Units that receive this national recognition serve as role models to others on their journey to excellent patient and family care.”
