Stead Heart & Vascular Center
Providing Nationally-Recognized Cardiovascular Health Services
Among all the hospitals in Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties, the
Stead Heart & Vascular Center at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center
(PVHMC) has set itself apart for providing the most complete line of cardiovascular
and stroke services in the region. For our work and our dedication to
world-class treatment, the Joint Commission has granted us the Gold Seal
of Approval™ as a Primary Stroke Center.
Our heart and vascular center has been recognized by several health organizations
for our commitment to the highest levels of treatment and care, including
our selection as one of the Top 50 Cardio Hospitals in the Nation in Thomson
Reuters' 2011 publication. We have also been recognized by the American
Heart Association, Healthgrades®, The Leapfrog Group, Solucient®,
Blue Shield, the Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development, and more.
Why Choose PVHMC's Stead Heart & Vascular Center?
The Stead Heart & Vascular Center was the first cardiovascular health
center in the region, and we continue to lead the field in our region
when it comes to treatment of heart conditions and strokes. Our lab includes
the most advanced diagnostic and non-invasive tools in the medical field,
offering our patients the most precise care with the least discomfort and risk.
All of our testing is performed by a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT),
ensuring the most accurate results and the least amount of ambiguity.
Our RVTs are each certified, and the exams they provide are interpreted
by an experienced, board-certified doctor.
Dedicated to all stages of heart health, our center provides preventative,
interventional, and rehabilitative care-particularly for stroke patients.
In our commitment to heart and vascular health for everyone, our center
also provides specialized care for women, who often exhibit different
heart problems and symptoms than male patients.

PVHMC has been providing comprehensive stroke services to our region and
surrounding communities since 2010. Our stroke program addresses the rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment of stroke. A stroke is caused
by the interruption of blood flow to the brain. This interruption is the
result of either a blockage from a blood clot or the bursting of a blood
vessel. 85% of strokes are the result of a blocked blood vessel.
Every second counts in the treatment of stroke patients. The faster the
patient identifies the symptoms of the stroke the sooner they can get
to the hospital the faster we can treat them. Patients lose millions of
brain cells every second blood flow is interrupted to the brain.
PVHMC wants you to
BE FAST. Know the signs and symptoms of stroke and act FAST.
B ALANCE: Sudden loss of balance or coordination
E YE: Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
F ACE : Facial droop, uneven smile
A RM: numbness, arm weakness
S PEECH: Slurred speech, difficulty speaking or understanding
T IME : Call 911. Get to PVHMC/hospital immediately
Stroke care starts when you call 911, and continues into the acute hospital
with treatment option that include TPA, the clot busting mediation as well as thrombectomy, the removal of a blood clot from the blood vessel in the
brain, causing the stroke.
Once the patient arrives at PVHMC, we provide expedited care and treatment
to reverse the stroke or to minimize the disability of stroke.
Our care and treatment prime the brain for recovery. Stroke recovery may
take up to one year.
We measure the recovery of our stroke patients using a modified Rankin
Our goal is to discharge our patients with a mRS of zero to two (see chart
below), with minimal disability, return to work and/or to have the ability
to perform the activities of daily living.
Our results for 2016 show that only 27% of patients are discharged from
our hospital with a mRS of 0-2.
However, after one year, 68% have recovered with a mRS of 0-2.
We have primed the brain for recovery with our FAST action and lifesaving

PVHMC is proud to share our results with our community demonstrating our

Stroke Centers across the nation.
