Accelerated Partial Breast Irradiation
APBI can be administered through two different treatment options. The first is the use of external beam treatments on a linear accelerator. The other option is to insert a catheter balloon into the lumpectomy cavity and irradiated through a radioactive source. With either method, the irradiated area is so small that treatment can be accelerated to two treatments for five consecutive days rather than one treatment for six weeks in the case of normal whole breast treatment methods. This is not only convenient in saving time, but it can also prevent the removal of the entire breast, allowing for natural cosmetic results after treatment is completed.
Hundreds of women with early-stage breast cancer have benefited from APBI treatment since 2002 when it first gained FDA approval. While not yet the standard of care in this country, APBI has so far shown to be equally as effective as whole breast irradiation.
