Want to know more about our Aquatic Therapy Program?

For some patients, and for some conditions, rehabilitation from injury or illness can be a long, difficult and painful process. Sometimes traditional land-based exercises may cause symptoms to actually flair in these individuals. In those cases, warm water Aquatic Therapy programs may offer an alternative road to recovery. The warmth relaxes and soothes, while the buoyancy of the water greatly reduces stress on the joints and muscles.

Aquatic Therapy is a specialized form of physical therapy conducted in temperature-controlled pools. Treatment plans are designed for each individual’s condition and primary problems and utilize rehabilitation techniques in the water to improve mobility, balance, strength and endurance. Aquatic Therapy sessions may include underwater walking and stair training, floatation buoys for stretching, and water weights for strengthening, all in a comfortable and safe environment. Obviously, the goal for our patients is less pain, better function, and greater independence!

Why is the warm pool more effective for some?

Buoyancy of Water

  • Provides a gravity-reduced environment
  • Decreases the forces on weight-bearing joints by 25% to 90%
  • Often allows earlier, less painful movement
  • Less fear of falling
  • All the above allows greater participation and this speeds recovery

Resistance in the Water

  • Builds endurance and strength
  • Increases flexibility
  • Improves balance and coordination
  • Maintains or regains muscle tone
  • Less stress to hypersensitive areas

Hydrostatic pressure of Water

  • Improves circulation
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Decreases swelling
  • Improves the muscles used in breathing

Patients with the following conditions often find Aquatic Therapy ideal for them:

  • Arthritis
  • Back injuries
  • Balance disorders
  • Chronic swelling
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Myofascial pain syndrome
  • Stroke and neurologic disorders
  • Orthopedic injuries
  • Osteoporosis
  • Post-surgical conditions
  • Total joint replacements

The ability to swim is not necessary to participate, but there are certain conditions not recommended for water-based therapy. Careful screening by a physician and physical therapists will determine if water-based rehabilitation is a good option for therapy.

Once discharged from formal Physical Therapy, many former aquatic patients choose to remain in our medically supervised and cash-based aquatic exercise classes, called Aquatic Wellness. We’ll give you the details if you’re interested!
