Dr. John Mourani, our medical director of infectious disease, shares what people need to know to protect themselves from the flu and how to treat it.

Why is this year’s flu season worse than others?

Australia experienced the worst flu season in five years as cases peaked three times higher than past seasons, according to official government surveillance reports. This year, flu cases have emerged early and there’s no clear reason as to why. One of the reasons we speculate that flu cases are higher than normal is that many COVID-19 mandates such as masking and social distancing have ended. As the outdoor temperature cools and more people gather indoors, viruses have more opportunities to spread.

Who’s At Risk?

People at increased risk for severe symptoms from the flu include: adults 65 and older, those with chronic health conditions that affect the heart and lungs, who have compromised immune systems, pregnant women and kids ages 5 and under.

Flu Symptoms

Common flu symptoms include a fever (above 99°F), cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, fatigue and a runny or stuffy nose.

How is it transmitted?

The flu is the most contagious in the first 3-4 days of having symptoms, but it can last up to seven days depending on the virus replication. To minimize transmission, stay away from people exhibiting signs of illness. If you feel sick, it is important to stay home, wash your hands and cover your cough.

Seeking Treatment

It is best to start flu treatment within the first 48 hours of experiencing symptoms. It’s important to get plenty of rest, stay hydrated and take over-the-counter decongestants and pain medication to help. Home remedies like vitamin-C, zinc, honey and teas can also alleviate symptoms.
