Falls are ony of the leading causes of injury and death, especially for older adults. For the elderly, falls can also reduce your ability to remain independent. However, no matter what age you are, these fall prevention tips can help reduce the risk of falling for you and your loved ones.
Talk to your health care provider

Get your vision and hearing checked annually
Make sure you update your eyeglass prescriptions if recommended. Your eyes and ears keep you alert to your surroundings.
Regularly review your medications
Take medications only as prescribed. Ask your doctor if the side effects of your medications place you at a greater risk of falling.
Stay active with a balance or exercise program
A yoga or tai chi class may help you build balance, strength and flexibility. Don’t forget to bring a friend!
Fall-proof your home
Check your home for adequate lighting, remove all potential tripping hazards, such as broken steps, throw rugs and clutter, and install handrails and grab bars in areas like staircases and bathrooms.
Take caution against environmental hazards
Keep an eye out for icy ground or wet floors, stay off of damaged sidewalks, and use assistive devices, such as walking sticks or canes, when you go out.
Wear sensible shoes
Shoes with nonskid soles and a proper fit may help reduce your risk of falling.
