EKOS™ Offers Advanced Minimally Invasive Treatment for Pulmonary Embolism and Deep Vein Thrombosis

Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) now offers a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive treatment called EKOS™ for patients with pulmonary embolism (PE) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). The Boston Scientific system is a safer and more effective method of dissolving dangerous blood clots.

“EKOS™ allows faster relief for PE or DVT and greatly reduces complications from bleeding,” said Guarav Parikh, MD, interventional cardiologist and medical director of cardiology at PVHMC. “Treatment is delivered directly to the site of the clot, and the amount of medication needed is less resulting shortened recovery time.”

A pulmonary embolism is caused by a blood clot blocking one or more arteries in the lungs, and results in approximately 100,000 U.S. deaths each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Clot-dissolving drugs combined with ultrasound technology break up clots easier using lower doses of medication compared to traditional treatments.

The EKOS™ system uses a specialized catheter that’s inserted into the blood vessel and guided directly to the blood clot site. High-frequency, low-power ultrasound waves loosen the clot’s structure, and allow the clot-dissolving medication to penetrate more deeply and work more efficiently. The result is faster clot dissolution, improved blood flow, and reduced pressure on the heart.

Traditionally patients with severe PE or DVT received high-dose systemic, the medical term for anti-clogging medication. Thrombolytics are known to have side effects that increase the risk of bleeding or other complications.

“The EKOS™ procedure is a safer, more targeted solution for managing this life-threatening condition and the new treatment is part of Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center’s ongoing commitment to bringing the latest medical advancements to its community,” adds Dr. Parikh.
