Providing music therapy to patients and Associates throughout PVHMC
Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC) announced the official initiation of the high school music service program, Healing Harmonies in August 2025. The purpose of the program is to provide music therapy to patients and during their recovery process, as well as Associates during particularly difficult shifts to uplift spirits.
According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, listening to music can have physical and psychological benefits by stimulating a variety of structures in the brain, and can even impact its structure.
“Through Healing Harmonies, I’ve learned that even a simple melody can lift spirits,” says Austin To, a guitarist and senior at Diamond Bar High School. “It’s special knowing my music can create moments of peace and connection for patients.”
Members of the Healing Harmonies program check in at least four times a week with the Charge Nurse of the unit they are assigned to identify which patients would like to hear music. Songs are rehearsed beforehand, but patients are always welcome to make song requests.
The program consists of five violinists, two vocalists, one guitarist, and one saxophonist.
From inspiring pediatric patients to join the program in the future, to moving families to tears while loved ones are in comfort care, Healing Harmonies’ performances have already had an impact on many patients.
“Whether it be a young child in pediatrics, our staff or patients, music provides an opportunity to step away from the current situation offering comfort, peace and joy,” says Christina Mullins, Director of Volunteer Services. “This embodies the spirit of our mission here at PVHMC.”
Healing Harmonies is currently looking to accept new members.
The musicians are selected based on their professionalism, empathy, and a respectful demeanor with patients. They adjust and adapt to each patient’s unique needs with the guidance of the Charge Nurse to provide the best experience possible.
