Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center welcomes patients who choose to bring a certified doula or midwife as part of their labor support. We recognize the valuable role support persons can play in helping patients feel informed, comfortable, and supported during labor and delivery.
Once inside the hospital, doulas and midwives function as support persons, not as members of the medical care team. They do not provide clinical care or make medical decisions. Medical management of labor and delivery is directed by the hospital’s physicians, nurses, and clinical staff.
Doulas and midwives may offer non-medical support such as comfort measures, positioning, breathing techniques, and encouragement, while working respectfully alongside the care team.
Our care team values collaboration and open communication. Support persons are expected to follow hospital policies and coordinate with nursing and medical staff to help ensure a safe, respectful environment that supports patient preferences whenever medically appropriate.
Certified doulas and midwives are permitted as part of the labor support team and are included within established visitation guidelines. Additional details are available on our Labor Support page.
Patients planning to bring a doula or midwife are encouraged to discuss this during prenatal visits so expectations are clear before arrival. This helps create a smooth and coordinated experience on the day of delivery.
