Warning Signs After Birth

The first few weeks after your baby arrives are a special time for both of you. Most recovery goes smoothly, but it’s helpful to know what symptoms are normal and which ones might need a doctor’s attention. Spotting warning signs early can help avoid complications and keep your family safe and healthy.

Warning Signs for Mothers

Seek medical attention promptly if you experience:

  • Heavy or unusual vaginal bleeding
  • Severe abdominal pain or cramping
  • Fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
  • Signs of infection around a C-section incision or perineal area
  • Severe or worsening headache, dizziness, or vision changes
  • Pain, redness, or swelling in your legs (possible blood clot)
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or difficulty bonding with your baby

Warning Signs for Your Baby

Seek medical attention promptly if your baby shows:

  • Fever (100.4°F / 38°C or higher) or feels unusually cold
  • Trouble breathing, persistent coughing, or wheezing
  • Poor feeding, refusing to feed, or very weak suck
  • Vomiting repeatedly or having green/bloody stools
  • Decreased wet diapers or signs of dehydration
  • Unusual sleepiness, irritability, or limpness
  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes) that worsens rapidly

When to Call or Go to the Emergency Department

  • For urgent symptoms such as severe bleeding, breathing problems, or chest pain, call 911 immediately
  • For concerning but non-life-threatening symptoms, contact your OB or pediatrician
