The first few weeks after your baby arrives are a special time for both
of you. Most recovery goes smoothly, but it’s helpful to know what
symptoms are normal and which ones might need a doctor’s attention.
Spotting warning signs early can help avoid complications and keep your
family safe and healthy.
Warning Signs for Mothers
Seek medical attention promptly if you experience:
- Heavy or unusual vaginal bleeding
- Severe abdominal pain or cramping
- Fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher
- Signs of infection around a C-section incision or perineal area
- Severe or worsening headache, dizziness, or vision changes
- Pain, redness, or swelling in your legs (possible blood clot)
- Shortness of breath or chest pain
- Persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or difficulty bonding with your baby
Warning Signs for Your Baby
Seek medical attention promptly if your baby shows:
- Fever (100.4°F / 38°C or higher) or feels unusually cold
- Trouble breathing, persistent coughing, or wheezing
- Poor feeding, refusing to feed, or very weak suck
- Vomiting repeatedly or having green/bloody stools
- Decreased wet diapers or signs of dehydration
- Unusual sleepiness, irritability, or limpness
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes) that worsens rapidly
When to Call or Go to the Emergency Department
- For urgent symptoms such as severe bleeding, breathing problems, or chest
pain, call 911 immediately
- For concerning but non-life-threatening symptoms, contact your OB or pediatrician
