Public health officials and medical experts recommend self-quarantine while waiting for your COVID-19 test result. While the idea of self-quarantining during the waiting process can seem both daunting and frustrating, in the event you test positive, this is critical to prevent potential spread of the virus to others.
Stay Home
- Do not leave your home unless you are in need of medical attention.
- Isolate yourself from others in the household by using a separate bedroom and bathroom.
- It is especially important to stay away from people who may be at a higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
- Avoid sharing personal household items, such as towels, eating utensils, food, etc.
- Do not handle pets or other animals.
- Notify people you have been in close contact with that you are waiting for COVID-19 test results and that they may have been exposed.
Practice Healthy Habits
- Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
- Disinfect high-touch surfaces and objects in the home, often, with household cleaning products.
- Wear a mask or face covering around others in the home.
- Cover your coughs and sneezes to prevent the spread of the virus.
Monitor your Health
- If you are feeling unwell, be sure to get plenty of rest, hydrate often and take acetaminophen, if needed, to reduce fever and pain.
- Seek medical attention immediately if you develop any of these emergency warning signs for COVID-19. If you call 9-1-1, notify dispatch personnel that you may have COVID-19.
