Endoscopy Procedure

What Is an Endoscope?

During endoscopy, a long, narrow, flexible tube called an endoscope is used. This instrument contains a strong light and a microscopic video camera. Your G.I. tract can then be viewed on a video screen.

Upper Endoscopy (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)

An endoscope is gently guided down the esophagus into the stomach and small intestine. During the procedure, biopsies may be taken, along with photos, which will help the physician in determining a diagnosis.

Pre-Procedure

A nurse will prepare the patient for the procedure by checking vital signs and reviewing medical history/medications. An intravenous (I.V.) will be established to administer a mild sedative for comfort throughout the procedure.

Recovery / Discharge

Following the procedure the patient will be closely monitored in our specially equipped recovery room. Prior to the discharge, the nurse will review post procedure instructions (a copy will be sent with the patient) and answer any questions. Transportation arrangements must be made in advance, as patients will not be able to drive themselves home.
