Health Insurance Coverage Information

Renew your plan for 2019 from October 15, 2018 through January 15, 2019. For coverage beginning January 1, 2019, you must sign-up by December 15, 2018.

It is important to take a look at your health plan during the renewal period because plan options and rates could change each year, and you may qualify for a different amount of financial help — especially if things like your income, household size and address have changed since last year. Renewal is also a great time to update your information with Covered California and shop for new coverage.

To see your health plan options and rates, use our Shop and Compare Tool. Then either sign in to your Covered California online account, contact a Certified Insurance Agent or Certified Enrollment Counselor, or call Covered California at (800) 300-1506 (TTY: [888] 889-4500) to make the change.

If you decide to shop for a new plan, sign in to your account before using the Shop and Compare Tool so that your selection can be saved. If you add a plan to your shopping cart before you are signed in, your selection may not be saved.

This year, Covered California offers a provider search tool to help consumers find health insurance plans with the doctors they want. Learn more about searching for providers available in plans you are considering for 2018.

As part of national health care reform, almost all Americans are required to have health insurance as of Jan. 1, 2014 or risk a tax penalty. The goal is to make coverage more available and affordable for those who do not have health insurance or have limited coverage.

Individuals and families may either qualify for private insurance coverage available through Covered California's health insurance exchange or for state-sponsored Medicaid coverage. A single streamlined application is used to identify the best coverage based on the individuals and/or family's income.

Private insurance coverage

The Covered California health insurance marketplace opens October 15, 2018 through January 15, 2019 to enroll those who qualify for premium subsidies and reduced out-of-pocket expenses or those who would like to purchase coverage for 2019. When open enrollment is closed, you can enroll in a Covered California health insurance plan only if you experience a qualifying life event. MediCal coverage

If you qualify for MediCal, you may apply at any time throughout the year. An application is available on the Covered California website or by contacting our Eligibility Services department.

Eligibility Services Department

Our Eligibility Services Department staff consists of Financial Counselors and Department of Public Social Services (DPSS) workers. Collaboratively the hospital staff and DPSS workers strive to make the application process timely and seamless. Our Financial Counselors undergo various training programs that include Certified Enrollment Counselor training through Covered California. The DPSS workers are stationed in the department to process your MediCal case and allow staff to track your case from start to finish.

Our Financial Counselors can assist you with obtaining coverage through the California Health Benefit Exchange (Covered CA), Medicare, Medi-Cal, California Children's Services Program, or charity care. We will help you complete the application, schedule appointments for you with a DPSS Worker and follow up with you to return all required documentation. We will assist you in following up with outside Eligibility Workers if you already have a pending case. We will also assist in setting up payment arrangements on cash discounted and or charity discount payments.
