Considering bariatric surgery is a big decision that should be taken with the utmost care. At Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center (PVHMC), we want to give our patients the knowledge they need to make the best choices about their health journey. Our complete evaluation process ensures patients receive personalized care and support tailored to their unique needs and circumstances.
BMI Requirement
Weight-loss surgery eligibility depends on several factors, including body mass index (BMI) and associated health conditions. Historically, candidates had to have a BMI of 40 or higher or a BMI of 35 or higher with obesity-related health issues such as diabetes, hypertension, or sleep apnea to qualify for bariatric surgery.
Recent guidelines, however, have lowered the BMI threshold for bariatric surgery eligibility. Now, individuals with a BMI of 35 or above, regardless of the presence, absence, or severity of obesity-related conditions, can receive bariatric surgery. Patients with a BMI of 30 or above may meet the criteria for bariatric surgery if they have at least one obesity-related condition, such as heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or severe sleep apnea, and have struggled with significant or sustained weight loss through non-surgical methods like diet, exercise, or medications. This expanded eligibility aims to offer life-changing options to a broader range of individuals struggling with obesity.
Adolescents may also be considered based on specific criteria. Each case undergoes thorough evaluation to determine suitability for bariatric surgery.Multidisciplinary Evaluation
At PVHMC, we conduct a thorough evaluation. We’ll look at your medical history, perform a physical exam, and provide psychological and nutritional assessments. This comprehensive approach ensures we consider all aspects of your health and can create a treatment plan just for you.
Physiological and Behavioral Assessment
Your ability to change your lifestyle, including eating and exercise habits, is crucial. Other conditions related to depression, anxiety, and eating disorders also need to be discussed since they can affect results post-surgery.
Pre-Surgery
You may be asked to follow a nutritional, exercise and diet plan before surgery.
We know that every patient is unique, so we customize our approach to meet your needs, keeping your safety and well-being at the forefront throughout your bariatric surgery journey.
