CPE About Us
Clinical Pastoral Education at PVHMC
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center
(PVHMC) is interfaith professional training for healthcare chaplaincy.
Students and ministers serve as chaplain interns to provide spiritual
and pastoral care to patients and their families while meeting the needs
of our religiously diverse community.
Chaplain interns learn how to offer a sensitive listening presence, help
to facilitate conversation about spiritual concerns and mobilize the spiritual
resources of patients and their families.
Chaplain interns learn how to provide support during family conferences
and are part of a multi-disciplinary health care team. They can provide
support with treatment decisions and can assist in communicating with
physicians and staff.
In addition, chaplain interns learn how to offer pastoral functions such
as prayer or sacraments (baptism, communion, anointing), and memorial services.
As chaplain interns learn how to provide support for patients and families
they also learn about themselves as the “primary tool” of
spiritual and pastoral care.
The CPE program at PVHMC is accredited by the Institute for Clinical Pastoral Training.
