When needed, SMC athletes will have access to PVHMC’s state-of-the-art Rehabilitation Services Department. Experts in athletic rehab, PVHMC Physical Therapists are trained to provide services that include return to sport programs, computerized testing, injury prevention, and performance enhancement. Athletic rehab at PVHMC:
The majority of the athletes treated at the SMC for musculoskeletal injuries do not require surgery. In these cases supervised physical therapy can achieve a full recovery. For those few injuries that do require surgery, recovery and treatment through PVHMC Rehabilitation Services will ensure the best possible chance of an athlete’s full return to sport. The physical therapist will establish an individualized treatment plan for all athletes regardless of injury. Here the athlete will receive care and instruction from experienced, licensed staff familiar with their particular injury.
The SMC at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center provides athletes with access to on-site diagnostics and tests that can greatly expedite their initial evaluation and diagnosis, enabling athletes to quickly begin treatment for their injury. The following diagnostic services are available through the Sports Medicine Center at PVHMC:
For injuries requiring the services of medical specialists such as orthopedic surgeons, ear-nose-throat specialists, neurosurgeons and cardiologists, immediate referrals will be made to skilled physicians with an interest in sports related injuries.
CIF rules mandate all student-athletes must complete and pass a Pre-Participation Examination (PPE) by a qualified physician each year before they will be allowed to play. The SMC is happy to provide this service to student-athletes. The SMC physician will screen the athlete for health concerns that might be made worse by participating in athletics. Health concerns may be identified early, thus reducing the risk of further injury or health problems and often allowing the athlete to address these issues in time to still play safely. PPE exams require an appointment, are available on Wednesday evenings and cost $31.
Urgent Care services at the POMONA VALLEY HEALTH CENTERS in La Verne, Claremont and Chino Hills (Crossroads) provide athletes with acute injury evaluation, x-rays, MRI, referrals to physician specialists and athletic rehabilitation. PPE sports exams are also available for $44.
