Rapid Medical Evaluation (RME)

RMENo one wants to have to go to the Emergency Room, but sometimes life gets in the way and you end up there whether you want to or not. Once there, you want fast treatment and an accurate diagnosis so you can either get back home or get into a hospital bed for admission. Rapid Medical Evaluation (RME) is a new program in our Emergency Department (ED) that assures you that a medical provider will assess your condition within minutes of arrival inside the ED. RME means less time waiting!

Because the ED provides care for critical situations along with minor illnesses such as ankle sprains, colds and sore throats, the RME process quickly determines those that need immediate attention. With four ED areas and a 23 hour observation area on the 6th floor, all types of emergencies can be managed. The ED staffs a minimum of two physicians and one physician assistant 24 hours a day, seven days a week. During busy times, the staffing can increase to as many as eight physicians and physician assistants. We have a multi-specialty Physician call panel. Consultants from all specialties are on call to come to the ED when needed.

Paramedic Base Stationstaff member

PVHMC is one of two Paramedic Base Stations in Los Angeles County who work to help coordinate the emergency caregivers in the community (Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians, and fire personnel.) The Base Station is staffed by specially trained Mobile Intensive Care Nurses (MICN) who work via closed circuit radio to coordinate care in the field (community) and to better prepare the ED staff for the imminent arrival of a critically ill or injured patient. This service is provided to the communities of Pomona, Claremont, La Verne, San Dimas, Diamond Bar and Walnut.

Disaster Resource Center (DRC)

As the DRC for the region, PVHMC is responsible for helping to coordinate eight to ten hospitals in the event of a regional disaster or a disaster that involves more than one hospital. PVHMC has coordinated multiple drills and training sessions and the sharing of plans to bring together the community and our resources for disaster preparedness. PVHMC is one of 13 designated DRCs in Los Angeles County and is also a part of the National BioTerrorism Hospital Preparedness Program (NBHPP).

Safe Surrender Program

In January 2001 Senate Bill 1368 – the newborn Abandonment Prevention Law – was enacted whereby a parent of a newborn, less than 72-hours of age, can relinquish their baby anonymously, without fear of criminal prosecution, to an employee at any hospital emergency department within the state of California. PVHMC immediately embraced the new law in order help save the lives of these infants.

Community Outreach Save

PVHMC is very involved with its community through a variety of programs, including the "Every 15 Minutes" program. This program educates local high school students of the dangers of drinking and driving. Working with local police and fire departments, ambulances, schools, and students and their families, an accident is simulated outside of a high school. Teenage students act the parts of the injured and deceased drivers and passengers. Following the "accident" the Grim Reaper enters a classroom every 15 minutes and escorts a student out of the room symbolizing the fact that every 15 minutes someone is killed by a drunk driver.
